Barley Green: Its Claims
Diets of individuals are highly variable in terms of nutritional content. Though generally sufficient amount of nutrients of food are obtained by consuming appropriate amounts of varied food, a lot of people still do not get the nutrition their bodies require. Hence, supplementation has been a persistent trend. And it’s not just the inclusion of micronutrients but also herbal supplementation. One of these herbal supplements rising to popularity nowadays is the barley green.
Barley Green and how it is produced
Barley green is made by first growing the barley grass. Seeds of barley are placed in a container of water. Once the seeds have sprouted, the shoots are allowed to further grow about ten inches before they are harvested. Then the harvested barley grass is turned into the powder form of barley green. It is manufactured from crystallized juice of the leaves. The powder is just added to water to form tea.
The many benefits associated with Barley Green
Manufacturers of the patented product claim that it has a great potency of amino acids, minerals, vitamins and other enzymes. It does not have gluten, has a neutral pH upon dissolution and without any preservatives. The product also endorses its chlorophyll content and other phyto-chemicals.
There is a claim that if the tea is prepared through hot water its essential nutrients and enzymes are lost. Some micro-nutrients manifest destruction upon exposure to heat, such as Vitamin C (which disintegrates into water and carbon dioxide upon exposure to heat). The claim recommends its inclusion to lukewarm or cool water if to be prepared in tea form.
Aside from its high nutrition possibilities, offers other benefits. For example Barley Green aids those who need more Vitamin K in their diet (green leafy vegetables provide that as well), and the mechanism may be due to the increased degradation of the grass extract in the gastrointestinal tract by the gut flora.
